I don't think the explanation behind them is really adequate, but it's clear what they are meant to portray. Rasmussen (the writer) puts together a series of events to entice the viewer and to keep them watching in order to spread the signal (fear). The found footage conceit and Rasmussen's eventual reveal is a very meta attempt to deconstruct the act of writing a Doctor Who episode. Gatiss was going for when writing this story. In reality, it's pretty clear to see what Mr. Doctor Who is all about experimentation and sometimes taking a risk means falling flat, but finding the intention behind the mistakes can do a lot to explain how this episode came to be.Ī post in the other subreddit has claimed that there was "no symbolism" in this episode, which I think couldn't be farther from the truth. That being said, I think that it's episodes like these that deserve to be talked about in more depth. Some have found fault in the explanation of the Sandmen, others have decried the found footage format, and others still have simply written the episode off as a failure. In the wake of the airing of the most recent episode, many people have come forward stating their disapproval. Any other interpretations are welcome and encouraged.
